You slept 8 hours last night. So why do you feel like you got none?
It's not how long you sleep — it's when you wake up. And once you understand the science behind it, you'll never set an alarm the same way again.
That's why we built the Sleep Calculator by Beverly Hills Bed — a free Chrome extension that takes the guesswork out of bedtime.
The 90-Minute Secret Most People Don't Know
Your sleep isn't one long stretch of rest. It's a series of 90-minute cycles, each one moving through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. At the end of each cycle, your body naturally rises to a lighter state — almost awake.
Wake up at the end of a cycle and you feel refreshed, clear-headed, ready to go.
Wake up in the middle of one — even after 8 full hours — and you feel groggy, foggy, and dragging. That feeling even has a name: sleep inertia.
Most alarm apps ignore this completely. They just ring at whatever time you set, cycle or not.
What Our Sleep Calculator Does Differently
Our free Chrome extension calculates your bedtime or wake-up time based on complete 90-minute cycles — so you always land at the right moment.
It works in two modes:
- Bedtime mode: Enter your wake-up time → get the ideal times to fall asleep tonight
- Wake-up mode: Enter your bedtime → get the best times to set your alarm
It calculates 3, 4, 5, and 6 full sleep cycles and highlights the optimal option for most adults (5 cycles = 7.5 hours). It also accounts for the time it takes to fall asleep — adjustable from 0 to 30 minutes based on how you sleep.
Every result is one click to copy. Set your alarm and go.
Why We Built This
At Beverly Hills Bed, we've spent nearly 20 years helping people sleep better — from adjustable air beds to custom-size mattresses and adjustable bases. But even the best mattress can't fix a badly timed alarm.
We built this tool because sleep quality isn't just about what you sleep on — it's about how you sleep. The science is simple, but most people have never been shown how to use it.
This extension is completely free, requires no account, and collects zero data. It's just a useful tool, from us to you.

Quick Reference: Sleep Cycle Times
Not sure what time to go to bed? Here's a quick guide based on a 14-minute fall-asleep offset:
| Wake-Up Time | 5 Cycles (Optimal) | 6 Cycles |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 10:31 PM | 9:01 PM |
| 6:30 AM | 11:01 PM | 9:31 PM |
| 7:00 AM | 11:31 PM | 10:01 PM |
| 7:30 AM | 12:01 AM | 10:31 PM |
| 8:00 AM | 12:31 AM | 11:01 PM |
These times assume 14 minutes to fall asleep. Use the extension to customize for your own sleep habits.
The Other Half of the Equation
Timing your sleep cycles is a game changer. But the surface you sleep on matters just as much.
Waking up with back pain, tossing and turning, or running hot through the night — those are mattress problems, not alarm problems. At Beverly Hills Bed, our adjustable air mattresses let you dial in the exact firmness level for your body, so you actually reach deep sleep instead of fighting your mattress all night.
Better sleep starts with the right foundation. The calculator helps you wake up at the right time. The right mattress helps you get there.
